Where it all began…
The night Pō‘ua found us was one of those stormy nights when the world felt a little too dark and the rain came down in waves. Thunder rolled over the house, and we were settling in when one of the grandchildren spotted something by the gate, a small soaked trembling dog standing bravely against the storm.
They scooped him up and brought him inside, dripping wet and shivering but with eyes so full of hope it was impossible to look away. My plan was simple, give him a warm place to rest for the night and take him to the humane society the next morning. I thought it would be a quick goodbye.
But Pō‘ua had other plans.
In a single night he worked his way into my heart. Maybe it was the way he stayed close to me as if he already knew he was safe. Maybe it was the soft sigh he let out when he finally relaxed curled up like he had been home all along. Or maybe it was the way he looked at me, not with fear but with trust, as if he had chosen us just as much as we had chosen him.
By morning I knew he was not going anywhere.
Pō‘ua became my best friend, the gentle soul who greeted me every day with love that asked for nothing in return. He opened my heart in ways I never expected, not just to him but to all the future dogs who would come into our lives because he showed me how big my heart truly could be.
He has since passed, and not a day goes by that I do not miss him, his warmth, his loyalty, and his quiet way of making every day brighter. Yet even in missing him, I am filled with gratitude. Because Pō‘ua did not just come into our lives that stormy night, he changed them.
Now I create these pieces in his memory, remembering the joy he brought our family. My hope is I can share even a fraction of the happiness and love he gave to us. Pō‘ua was a gift, a small storm soaked miracle who arrived at the gate one night and left behind a legacy of love that continues to shine through every necklace made.
